The aim at Pen Y Garn has been to enjoy the garden all year round.  We have planted to get all year interest which is easier in the spring summer and autumn.  Winter is much more of a challenge. Reading the Gardeners World Magazine this morning I was delighted to tick off all the plants in Carol Klein’s winter favourites in Pen Y Garn’s garden.  The restoration and development of the garden over the last 3 years has been a massive undertaking.  No garden is ever ‘finished’, but we are considerably further on and unless I have another bright idea all the major projects are complete now.

The winter flowers have to really strut their stuff to attract the brave insects so they make up for their rather small flowers but really belting out their glorious perfume.  Pen Y Garn currently has in flower the Viburnums, winter flowering Jasmine, Cyclamen, Violas, and looking forward to the wonderful perfume of the sarcococca and the Wallflowers.  The hellebore garden had a big makeover this year and the slow growing daphne has grown just a tiny bit. The bright red stems of the Cornus are looking particularly lovely and glowing in the low winter light.

Now where could I pop in a witch hazel?
